During my travels as a journalist in different parts of the world and being a diplomatic correspondent , I have been able to interact , God knows with so many diplomats from different parts of the world. There are always various questions that keeps popping up in our interactions like who is a diplomat, what do they do, how do they do their work, how is their work measured by their home governments and what are the good qualities of a good diplomat? Is it Loyalty, is it discretion ,speed, honesty, good judgement ,accuracy, personal appearance or getting on with people and its Diaspora?
If I put this question to your audience most people would favour Good Judgement, Honesty and Discretion. I argue that the answer is Accuracy. If you are smart, loyal, honest and discreet, but get the basic facts wrong, are you a menace to everyone?
Few diplomats would challenge the proposition that loyalty is a central part of their work. More likely they would say that because loyalty is such a central part of their professional life, it ‘goes without saying’. Nonetheless, this begs the question: loyalty to what precisely?.
Ladies and gentlemen, there is one Tanzania diplomat that im honoured to know and I can tell my grand children that he was a true diplomat in all sense and all scenarios. It is Balozi Joram Biswaro, former Tanzania’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Africa union and ECA.Jamaa kichwa na shoka sana-Mchapa kazi haswa.
This man has all the characteristics and qualities that I have mentioned above as a true Diplomat. You made us proud in Addis .
