School suspends 53 Form Six students

While the country struggles to increase the number of professionals across all sectors, some 53 Form Six candidates of St. Anne Marie Academy in Mbezi kwa Msuguri in Kinondoni district, Dar es Salaam, have been suspended from classes and forced to miss their mock examinations.

The school administration found it fit to suspend the students following an incidence of violence earlier this week in which allegedly a school guard attacked a student severely injuring them.
In defence of their colleague, several students responded in mob action that resulted in the damage of property consequently the management suspended them.
In the wake of the decision, parents of the students requested the school management to allow the students to sit for their mock examinations which will play a key part in their finals ahead of joining university.
The parents’ committee chairperson, Adel Alex, said the decision to dismiss the students will affect theiracademic performance in the finals due in May only two months away.
"We request both the government and the school management to consider the future of these children because results for the mock examinations are also considered in the finals …,” he said.
An investigation officer from the Kinondoni police zone maintained that the suspension is necessary to pave way for investigations.
Over the telephone interview he said the force has contacted the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) to make special arrangements for the students to sit for the exams.
Kinondoni Regional Police Commander Camillius Wambura confirmed the incident and indentified the injured student as Losila Emmanuel (20) and the guard who hit him as Leonard Kayago (21). The student is recovering at Boch Hospital in Mbezi kwa Msuguri. No details were offered as to the whereabouts of the guard.
