CECAFA quarter finals
Kenya’s AFC
Leopards and Ethiopia’s Defence will be facing each other this Friday evening
at 6:30pm in the first quarter final of the inaugural CECAFA Nile Basin Cup
here at Al-Merreikh stadium.
The two sides have met in
the CAF Confederations Cup this year with the Kenyan side winning both
fixtures. AFC Leopards is also the only club among the 8 quarter finalists that
won all its three group stage matches. Defence qualified with only 3 points
from the two games played. Al-Merreikh hosts Academie Tchite later at 8:30 pm.
No Extra time
CECAFA
Secretary General Nicholas Musonye told quarter finalists on Thursday evening
at Grand Holiday Villa that the tournament rules provided no extra time at
quarter final stage. In case no winner is decided within the 90’ minutes of
normal time, the matches will go direct into spot kicks. The semifinals will
however have extra time added.
36 goals scored
The group
stage matches ended with a total of 36 goals scored from the 15 matches played.
Group ‘A’ had 16 goals, Group ‘B’ 12 goals and Group ‘C’ 8 goals. Uganda’s
Victoria University is the only clubs that goes into the quarter final stages
without a single goal conceded.
2 players suspended
The quarter
final stages will have two players missing in action over suspension. Mutyaba Muzamir [Victoria University] will
watch their game against Mbeya City from the terraces after being sent off by
referee by referee Tedesse Belay [Ethiopia] during their last game against
Police. Meneylu Wondemu of Defence was also red carded in their game against Ahly-Shandi
last Friday.
Yellow cards waived
The group
stage matches have had a total of 57 yellow and 4 red cards dished out. Malakia
[10], Victoria University [9], Al-Merreikh [8], Mbeya City [5], Academie Tchite
[5], Etincelles [4], AFC Leopards [4], Police, Al-Shandy, Defence and Dkhill
have 3 yellow cards each. The four direct red cards went to Defence, Victoria
University, Dkhill and Police.
