Government has announced in a fresh statement that the kaveera ban will stand contrary to a previous statement that the ban had been suspended.
The Minister of Information and National Guidance, Maj. Gen Jim Muhwezi had earlier released a statement that read in the last paragraph that the ban on the plastic carriers (Buveera) had been lifted.
"......Cabinet, therefore, suspended the ban on plastic carrier bags until the consultation process with the stakeholders as directed by the President is concluded," the statement read.
The ministry has however retracted the statement, issuing a new one which asserts that the ban will stand.
"......Cabinet, therefore, directed the Minister of water and Environment to instruct NEMA to continue implementation of the ban of plastic bags of 30 microns and below until cabinet provides guidance on how to handle other types of plastic materials," It reads.
Six years of hesitation, government resolved to effect the ban on polythene bags that are responsible for environmental degradation on April 15.
