Veteran journalist, Chrysostom Rweyemamu (R) is sworn in as Chairperson of the panel of judges for this year's Excellence in Journalism Awards Tanzania (EJAT).
Winners of the Excellence in Journalism Awards Tanzania (EJAT) and Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Award will be presented their awards next month on April 24 at a colourful event to be held in the nation’s commercial city, Dar es Salaam.
Making the announcement yesterday in Dar es Salaam, Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) Executive Secretary and EJAT 2014 Organising Committee Chairperson Kajubi Mukajanga said there was a notable increase in the number of participants.
“MCT received a total of 959 entries increased from the 907 entries registered in the 2013 awards,” he said citing that the submissions were from a total of 69 media outlets spread across the country.
Noting that the awards have consistently registered increased participation annually, the Organising Committee Chairperson pointed out that in 2009 there were 304 entries, 437 in 2010, 772 in 2011, 946 in 2012, 907 in 2013 and last year 959 participants submitted their works.
He said this year, Dar es Salaam based journalists made the most number of submissions with 412 entries followed by Mwanza (198), Kagera (66), Zanzibar (46) and Arusha (37).
The submission were The Guardian (137 ), Mwananchi (87), Afya Radio (68),Sahara Communication Ltd (63), Radio Sauti FM (50), Tanzania Broadcasting Cooperation (46), Tanzania Standard Newspaper (42), Rai Mwema Company (37), ITV/Radio One (35) and TV One (28).
“The categories of areas of reportage have also increased over the years from only nine categories in 2009 to the current 21 for the 2014 awards with the inclusion of two new categories,” he said.
He named the new categories as Maternal Health and Newborn Babies and the other on Reporting on the Extractive Industries.
The Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) Executive Secretary also took the time to announce that selection process for the winner of the 2014 Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Award has also begun and will recognise contributions that have left an indelible mark on the media industry of the country.
Meanwhile, MCT President, retired Judge Thomas Mihayo yesterday swore in this year’s Panel of Judges to begin scrutinising the entries and select the best for recognition.
To be chaired by Chrysostom Rweyemamu, the panel of judges includes the following, Edda Sanga, Jesse Kwayu, Suleiman Kissoky, Allan Lawa, Joyce Bazira, Ali Uki, Theophil Makunga and Charles Kayoka.
