TASAF CALLS UPON MEDIA TO HIGHLIGHT RURAL POVERTY.

BY AMRI LUGUNGULO
Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) has asked the top management to collaborate with journalists to ensure accurate reports on poverty eradication countrywide.

The Executive Director, Ladislaus Mwamanga told participants at a workshop on productive social safety net (PSSN) programme in Tanga recently that proper collaboration with the media will deny the distortion of facts, a hindrance to development and household inaccessibility to government funds.

The workshop involved participants from various government institutions including, district coordinators, monitoring officers, accountants and journalists in Tanga, Dar es Salaam and  Coast regions.

He said the third phase of TASAF initiatives has so far empowered a number of households with the distribution of funds of between 10,000/- and 38,000/- depending on individuals level of poverty.

“Few households continue to reel in poverty due to the failure to use government services like education to come out from poverty,” he said.

He added, “The new TASAF initiative of giving subsidy to poor households has successfully helped in poverty reduction to rural dwellers”.

He said so far, the research conducted has identified 70 percent of the poor households as they wait to identify the other remaining percentage.

According to him, the programme has so far impressed multi-national financial organisations including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which currently supports the initiative under the Millennium Development Goal (MDG).

The funds Director of Poverty Eradication and Empowerment, Fariji Mishael urged participants to build teamwork to make the programme successful.
