Uganda National Examination Board has selectively increased the charges for verifying examination results for political aspirants by eight-fold, enabling the entity to cash in on election spending by prospective candidates. Previously, politicians intending to vie for political offices paid Shs 35,000 for O-Level and the same amount for A-Level for verifying each of their result slips.
But the fee has been raised to Shs270,000 per certification of each result slip.
It is a prerequisite for candidates wishing to contest in the various political parties to attach certified academic documents for both Senior Four and Senior Six papers before they can be allowed to vie for the respective political positions. Mr James Tweheyo, who is contesting for the NRM National Workers’ League chairperson, termed the Uneb fee as ‘ridiculous’ after paying the money last Friday.

“I have been to Ntare School and Mbarara High School to pick recommendation letters to bring to Uneb and then they want us politicians to pay Shs540, 000 to verify the results contrary to the official Shs35,000. This is ridiculous.,” Mr Tweheyo said last Friday.
Mr Hamis Kaheru, the Uneb spokesperson, attributed the hike of the verification fees to the high number of politicians who flock their offices in Ntinda, Kampala, demanding to be availed their certificates as a matter of urgency.
“It depends on what you want. Verification of result slips for politicians has been increased. The politicians are now paying Shs270,000 per level. But others will continue paying Shs35,000,” Mr Kaheru said in an interview. He added: “The board has the leeway to fix fees at any time. The reason for politicians paying Shs270, 000 is because they come in a season. It is a special service.”
Already, 2,476 contestants picked NRM internal forms for various party positions at national level alone. This means that Uneb has so far collected Shs1.3 billion from NRM party.
