TMA LAUNCHES FIRST EVER CLIMATE REPORT ON TANZANIA

The first ever climate report specific for Tanzania was launched at the start of the week in Dar es Salaam depicting among other things, the causes of various weather incidents that have occurred in the country.

Launched by the Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) The Tanzania Climate Report for 2011 allows the public access not only to weather forecasts but also detail the causes of varying weather occurrences experienced in the year 2011.

Speaking during the launch, TMA Director General Dr Agnes Kijazi said, for Tanzania, the year 2011 was characterised by incidences of extreme weather events with various parts of the country recording higher daily values of rainfall.

“There were severe floods, especially in Dar es Salaam where 43 people died, major parts of the city transportation network were destroyed and many residents were left homeless,” she said.
“Through the report people will now know what caused such bad weather,” she added.

She went on to note that, the report shows the climatic factors associated with severe weather and extreme climatic events in 2011 especially the disastrous rainfall event of December 2011 are linked to warming over the Northern Australia and the prevailed surface westerly wind which pushed warm surface water towards Western Indian Ocean.

Dr Kijazi called upon the public to read the report which is available in all major libraries across the country as well as on TMA’s official website.
She took the opportunity to announce that TMA will now be issuing every year’s report on climate status of Tanzania with the 2012 report following soon.
