TWO FISHERMEN DROWN IN LAKE VICTORIA

Mara Region Police Commander, Philipo Kalangi

The bodies of two fishermen were recovered over the weekend and according to police, the two died after their fishing vessel capsized in Lake Victoria.

Briefing reporters, the Mara Region Police Commander, Philipo Kalangi said the incident occurred on Friday and that the two missing fishermen were survived by a third comrade.

He named the victims as Maige Maelo Malima (20) of Kigagana village and Abeli Nyerere (19), of Kenkombyo village in Bunda District, survived by Sprian Chibuga(30) of Muhurura village in the district.

“The survivor managed to swim to the lake shore...a search was launched but the two victims were not found,” he said.

“The search party managed to find and recover their bodies on Saturday afternoon,” the RPC said.

On his part, the Namarama Village Executive Officer, Tekele Muligawe fell short of specifying what caused the canoe to capsize but was keen to urge fishermen to fish during the day as opposed to the customary night fishing on the lake.

He also cautioned that it is more dangerous to fish in the night citing recent attacks by hippos, crocodiles and other wild animals.

“It has been common now to see fishermen being attacked by hippos and crocodiles during night fishing,” he said.

“So, I call upon fishermen in Lake Victoria to be careful...they should put their safety first above anything else,” he advised.
