MAN HELD OVER RAPING MOTHER, KILLING BROTHERS

By ISSA ALIGA
LWENGO.
A sombre mood engulfed Lyambogo village in Malongo Sub-county, Lwengo District on Thursday when a man allegedly raped his 65-year- old mother and hacked his two bothers to death.
Police said Simon Mushabe, 40, who was under influence of marijuana, first raped his mother before killing his bothers: Hussein Semakula and Sande Kankunda.
According to Mr Noah Serunjogi, the southern region police spokesperson, Mushabe, who was armed with a machete (panga), raped his mother at her home and she made an alarm which attracted the deceased who came to rescue her.
“When her two young sons rushed to see what had happened, Mushabe turned against them, cutting one by one to death using a panga,” Mr Serunjogi said.
Police took the bodies to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem.
Mr Serunjogi said police found dried marijuana leaves in Mushabe’s pocket.
“After receiving information, our team rushed to the scene and found him (Mushabe) hiding in a nearby toilet holding his killer panga and dried marijuana. We were told that this is the exact place he has been using to smoke his marijuana,” Mr Serunjogi said.
Some residents blamed the gruesome murder on police whom they accused of handling marijuana smokers with kid gloves by releasing them easily on bond.
However, Mr Serunjogi counter-blamed the local leaders, saying they are the ones who often secure bonds for the suspected criminals, claiming they are their voters.
He said police have registered eight cases of murder under influence of marijuana since the year began.
Mushabe’s mother said the suspect dropped out of school after Primary Seven and joined unscrupulous groups and has always threatened to kill her.
Growing and smoking of marijuana is taking root in Lwengo District. According to police records, 20 people have been arrested in connection with growing and dealing in marijuana in the last couple of months.
